Trade Regulation Updates

US Government Set to Establish a 50% Tariff on Copper Imports Beginning August 1st

August 1, 2025

[UPDATE]

On July 30, 2025, the US government released a proclamation and a fact sheet detailing a new 50% tariff on semi-finished copper and intensive copper derivative products. This tariff came into effect on August 1st, 2025, at 12:01 AM.

There are several key considerations involved in this new tariff:

  • The intention of the Commerce Department is to establish a “process for including additional derivative copper articles”.
  • They intend to monitor imports and determine if a modification to this trade action is needed.
  • The tariff will be assessed based on the value of the copper content of the good, but the remainder will still be subject to the IEEPA reciprocal tariffs or other duties.
  • The tariff does not apply to the auto/parts section 232 tariffs.
  • There is no duty drawback at this time.

On July 9, 2025, the US Government announced its intention to implement a 50% tariff on all imported copper into the US, citing a Section 232 national security trade investigation as the inciting cause.

The tariff is said to be coming into effect on August 1st, 2025, along with a suite of other international trade tariffs.
