Automakers Receive Month-Long Reprieve from US 25% Tariffs

March 5, 2025

On March 5, 2025, at the urging of automakers, the US Government announced a reprieve on the implementation of the 25% tariffs imposed on Canadian and Mexican imported automotive goods.

This reprieve will apply only to vehicles qualifying under the US-Mexico-Canada Free Trade Agreement, regardless of the North American automobile manufacturer.

In a quote from White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, she outlined that this decision was made in consultation with the “Big Three” auto dealers and that the President still plans to proceed on April 2nd, 2025, with reciprocal tariffs, which includes additional tariffs on automobiles.
