Canada Enacts Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods

March 7, 2025

In an official announcement on March 3rd, 2025, Canada announced the implementation of a retaliatory 25% tariff on a list of specific goods from the US that took effect on March 4th, 2025. This tariff is on $155 billion of American goods, with $30 billion being implemented immediately and the remaining $125 billion coming into effect in 21 days’ time.

This decision comes as a result of the sweeping 25% tariffs implemented by the US that came into effect on March 4th, full details of which can be found here.

The complete statement with the rationale of the Canadian government can be found here, and the full technical details of the tariff, including affected items, can be found here.

UPDATE: In response to the month-long pause on US tariffs announced on March 4th, the Canadian government has implemented a pause on the second half of the $125 billion that was intended to come into effect after public comment.

According to Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, should the situation move ahead as currently projected, Canadian retaliatory tariffs, along with the US 25% across-the-board tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods, will come into full effect on April 2nd.
